An extraordinary Tarot deck! I first acquired this deck back in the 1960's. Its full value was revealed to me when I purchased the book "The Qabalistic Tarot" by Robert Wang, which has become my foremost Tarot and Qabala reference work. I was one of many who petitioned U. S. Games Systems to reissue this wonderful deck. My original deck is still in pristine condition, so I was tardy in purchasing the new edition. What spurred my to purchase it now was the Amazon review I read (from 2006) that panned this new edition, criticizing the quality of the graphics. I was disturbed by this possibility, so I just purchased a fresh copy of the deck to evaluate it myself.To my scrutiny, I find the cards in the new edition to be larger than the original. Also, borders used in the original edition have been removed, allowing the size of the images to become noticeably larger. I can detect little, if any, deterioration in image quality. Perhaps the "white" in the black-and-white artwork is slightly brighter then the "white" of the original deck, but I do not consider this a defect. It could probably be attributed to aging.I love this deck, and I am critical only of Godfrey Dowson's decision to brand the three "mother" cards of the Major Arcana Trumps (XX: The Last Judgment, XII: The Hanged Man, and 0: The Fool), with symbols representing the three "planets" (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, respectively) that were unknown in the ancient world from which the cosmology of Qabala arose. This error in judgement has proven a further embarrassment since Pluto was demoted from its standing as a planet.Qabala and Tarot are both deeply rooted in numerology and astrology. The seven "planets" of astrology (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) are significant in constructing the Sacred Geometry of Hermeticism, as well as giving us the constituents of our seven-day week! The 22 Taro Trumps are equated with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The 12 "Single-Letters" of Hebrew are matched with the 12 signs of the Zodiac. The 7 "Double Letters" of Hebrew are paired with the 7 planets of ancient astrology. The remaining three "Mother-Letters" (Shin, Mem and Aleph) do not have an astrological association, but rather represent three of the four elements of Tarot and Qabala (Fire, Water and Air, respectively). These four elements are also equated with the Tetragrammaton, the four Hebrew letters (Yod-He-Vau-He) which spell the sacred name of God. (Note: Since ancient Judaism prohibited using the name of God in vain. the final "He" was often omitted in ancient Hebrew. literature.)I strongly advise all students of occult mysticism to arm themselves with Godfrey Dowson's "Hermetic Tarot" deck and Robert Wang's "Qabalistic Tarot" volume, and prepare to delve into a lifetime study of esoteric ancient wisdom.

This deck is one that all professionals and serious students of the tarot should own. It's loaded with symbolism related to alchemy, astrology, and the occult. I have been offering tarot readings for years mostly using the Rider Waite deck. I have taken on the task of mastering this deck as a means of understanding the tarot on a deeper level.Be aware that there is a learning curve. While anyone with a knowledge of tarot should be able to translate to these cards fairly quickly, anyone without a complete knowledge of astrology and alchemy will find themselves doing a lot of research, should you choose to fully utilize the potential of this deck.I believe that to truly give a great tarot reading you must learn the rules and then "forget" them. It's like playing improvisational music. You won't be able to do it well without study the technical side but the best stuff comes spontaneously from the intuition.I personally recommend Rider Waite to anyone learning the tarot. This might be a little bit too ambitious for a first deck. But I think anyone who has a little background in tarot will find themselves happily engaged with this deck. Most cards have associated planets and astrology signs so that you can look up the meaning of "Saturn in Leo" for example to get a richer understanding when analyzing a spread. Most cards also have associate angels each of whom is responsible for various tasks.Anyone who works with magick will find this information very useful.Many tarot decks take the basic Rider Waite deck and remake it with a theme so that it's more about connecting to the artwork. There is nothing wrong with that but this is something else. Not a cute deck, but not dark either. Loaded with information that really will require study but anyone who is serious will gladly and happily take that challenge. It has already given new dimension to my readings. I love research and spend much of my time online googling various terms. I'm really glad I chose to explore this deck. If you don't want to study and prefer to work totally intuitively it may not be for you. If you're a serious student of tarot, the kabbalah, or the occult in general this deck may become your favorite.

I have read some really bad reviews on this card deck in particular about the cut of the cards and the bad quality/pixelation of the cards. And I almost got upset because I thought I remembered my cards having the same issue but then again I doublechecked and I seen no wrong cut or bad pixelation in fact from a closer look, I found my cards to have great detail. And enhancement making up for the lack of color. So detailed and so potentially animated that I could visualize each card acting out their place on the card. I have seen the bad pixelation in other re views and I believe those cards to be brought from possibly a different company or they were just simply that of a bad batch. Or the end of the batch prior to starting a new. I encourage you to not give up on this deck and to buy another deck. As I believe it to be Wholy worth it.

I heard that this deck had a lot of printing errors in the past, however, I got mine and let me tell you the quality is GREAT, I love the design as it resonates with me and I feel comfortable practicing with it.

These are the most detailed, thorough and absolutely beautiful tarot cards I've ever seen. I've owned the RW deck before, and liked them. I didn't really know how I'd react to black and white cards, as it seemed like the cards themselves may be losing something, but these have so much detail and information included in their grayscale form, I can't imagine being anything but overwhelmed by these in color. They're absolutely perfect. These are *my* cards now, this is *my* deck.

Some of the text appears periodically against a framed black backdrop, … la silent movie captions, while a silvery web is progressively woven in the background. Finely detailed scenes foreshadow Fly's demise with subtle, Charles Addams-esque humor that, while it may escape younger readers, will tickle the Lemony Snicket set. (In one scene, previous insect victims, now ghosts with their feet hovering above the floor, hold up a copy of The Joy of Cooking Bugs, in a vain warning to Fly.) DiTerlizzi has spun a visual treat that young sophisticates and adults alike will enjoy. Ages 6-up.

Grade 1-6-Most people are familiar with Howitt's poem, but DiTerlizzi's art raises this hackneyed classic to a new level. Rendered in black-and-white gouache and pencil, then reproduced in silver-and-black duotone, the paintings have a spooky quality perfectly suited to retelling this melancholy tale. Ms. Fly, with her whimsical flower umbrella and Roaring '20s attire, captures the flavor of an old-time Hollywood heroine. Her nemesis, seated on his Victorian chair, is dressed like a pasha in silk robe and slippers (six, of course) or resplendent in tails, top hat, and spats; he is clearly a dastardly fiend cloaked in splendid apparel to dazzle his victim. Wispy, transparent, ghostly shapes haunt the eerie mansion; the white print on the black pages stands out against the shadows creeping across each spread. All of these elements foreshadow the fly's untimely demise. With its tragic ending, heavy moralizing, and sophisticated artwork, this book will appeal to older children as well as to adult fans of old horror movies. This title is worth purchasing for its valuable artwork alone.

The smarmy visage of the spider leering at Miss Fly, who is sweetly attired in fringed flapper garb, says plenty. The melodrama is wonderful: Miss Fly--hand on forehead, hand on heart, two hands outstretched in protest (and two legs, of course, makes six)--declares, "Oh no, no . . . Kind sir, that cannot be. / I've heard what's in your pantry and I do not wish to see." Diaphanous ghosts of Spider's previous victims float nearby, but they're unable to change the fate of Miss Fly, who falls victim to Spider's flattery and her own pleasing reflection in a bottle-cap looking glass. Older children will be most likely to catch the intricacies in the monochromatic artwork--the various poses of the multiple appendages, the butterfly-wing curtains, and other delightfully creepy buggy details. Economists generally have a poor track record when it comes to making accurate predictions (eg, the vast majority of them missed the global meltdown which began in 2007), so it's easy to get discouraged and dismiss the whole field as pseudoscientific nonsense. But then there's also the nagging suspicion that there has to be *something* useful in there and, after all, we're perpetually affected by economic issues and can ignore them only at our peril.In my opinion, this short course by Randall Bartlett does a surprisingly good job of sorting the wheat from the chaff, and showing that economics does indeed offer some tools which can help us make better decisions. Bartlett organizes these tools into categories of 6 principles, 3 core concepts, and then a bunch of other tools. I think it's more straightforward to just put all the tools in one toolbox, and here are the tools I found most noteworthy:(1) People respond to incentives. This can help us predict behavior, and it also means that we can deliberately structure incentives in ways that foster better decisions at individual and/or social levels.(2) Because resources are limited, all alternatives involve tradeoffs and opportunity costs. Identify them and factor them in when making decisions.(3) Every interaction involves at least two sides. Consider all sides when making decisions.(4) Recognize that our outcomes will be influenced by outside factors which can't be anticipated and/or controlled. Likewise, recognize that our decisions will have outcomes, including outcomes external to us ("externalities"), which can't be anticipated and/or controlled. On a social level, "Pareto optimality/efficiency" is the state where no one's situation can be further improved without harming someone else, though such a state isn't necessarily preferable or fair (eg, everyone could be at a comparably low or mediocre level, or the level of inequality could be unacceptable due to being out of proportion with merit or need).(6) Having limited resources also means that we can never eliminate all risks and achieve perfect safety. The optimum level of safety needs to be determined by marginal analysis, accounting for estimates of probabilities for various possible outcomes. Also, most people tend to be risk averse, which means that they're more inclined to avoid a loss than obtain an equal gain, although there are also other people who actually enjoy risk.(7) People will usually try to make rational decisions, according their understanding of situations and their subjective values and preferences. However, our understanding can be quite inaccurate, we're inherently subject to all sorts of irrational biases and heuristic shortcuts, and people can cheat (eg, "free riders"), all of which tends to bound or outright undermine rationality. Acquiring more information can help, but information gathering also has a cost, so there comes a point where the marginal benefit of additional information isn't worth the marginal cost (ie, there's such a thing as "rational ignorance"). Information gathering itself can be made more efficient by using aggregation resources (eg, social networking websites and prediction markets), but we need to beware of "information cascades" due to groupthink, as we see with market bubbles. We can also improve information gathering by consulting with specific people, but such people (even "experts") still have their limitations, and "information asymmetries" can occur when people have an incentive to withhold or distort information (eg, salespeople).(8) Even when people rationally pursue their self-interest and play by the rules, there are "Prisoner's dilemma" situations in which the "invisible hand" doesn't work, and instead the result is that everyone is worse off (eg, environmental degradation due to "tragedy of the commons"); intervention by an external agent (eg, government), such as by structuring rules and incentives, is required to prevent this and at least move towards Pareto optimality.(9) Money is generally worth more in the present than future for several reasons: inflation erodes the value of money, money available now can grow through investment, and money available now can be used for immediate gratification (as opposed to delayed gratification). But of course, there are still tradeoffs, since money spent now can't be used for investment.Overall, this is an excellent course and I highly recommend it. Though short, it packs in plenty of useful content.

About the Author
Dr. Susie H. VanHuss received her B.S. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and her MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. Her teaching specialties include business communications, administrative systems, and personnel management. Her work, includes textbooks in communications, keyboarding and word processing, and office technology. She has written numerous journal articles and has served on the editorial review boards of several leading business education journals.

Dr. Connie M. Forde is a full professor and head of the Department of Instructional Systems and Workforce Development at Mississippi State University, where she leads undergraduate programs in information technology services, business technology teacher education, and industrial technology, as well as graduate programs in instructional technology. Dr. Forde also continues to advise doctoral students on their dissertation research. Prior to her tenure at Mississippi State University, she was a business teacher at both the community college and secondary levels. She earned her B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in business education from the University of Southern Mississippi and her Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Forde serves as coauthor of the COLLEGE KEYBOARDING series and a variety of word processing and integrated applications textbooks and simulations. She is a recognized contributor to the professional literature and a speaker at state, regional, and national conferences. Additionally, she has served as president of the National Business Education Association, Southern Business Education Association, and National Council of Pi Omega Pi, and chair of the Foundation for the Future of Business Education.

Donna L. Woo is an instructor and department coordinator for Information Systems/Office Automation at Cypress College and associate director of education at Pacific College. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in business education from Michigan State University and earned her Ed.D. from Nova University.
