Review

"Riveting." ―The National Interest"From missile defence systems to drones, Israel is a world leader in the lucrative field of military technology. So much so that it is changing the face of warfare in the Middle East and around the globe, say Yaakov Katz and Amir Bohbot in their highly informative book." ―Sheldon Kirshner, The Times of Israel"Many of the weapons that make precise combat possible have their origins in Israel. The Weapon Wizards recounts how and why the small state has developed such advanced weaponry." ―The New Atlantis "[Katz and Bohbot] ask how such a small country has managed to be at the forefront of advanced weapons development, having made significant contributions to drones, satellites, missle-defense systems, cyber warfare and more." ―Survival"Fascinating." ―The Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs"Fascinating...[Katz and Bohbot] present an intriguing and engrossing account of Israel's defense capabilities development." ―The American Thinker"The challenges of defending the Jewish state get very real in the pages of The Weapon Wizards... the story of its weapons development and deployment is especially fascinating and highly consequential." ―The Jewish Journal"Israel has succeeded in myriad areas where entire continents have failed. How they have done that is something that can partially be duplicated. And it’s something that every responsible politician concerned about job growth, and every CEO concerned about leadership and teambuilding should attempt to learn from. A stimulating read, The Weapon Wizards should be on the required reading list of every executive, politician and business manager." ―Ben Rothke, The Times of Israel"The authors have skillfully conveyed a key component of the dynamic innovation culture that has made the Jewish state one of the most important entrepreneurial and technology-driven economies in the world." ―The Wall Street Journal"A lively account of Israel's evolving military prowess...if The Weapon Wizards were a novel, it would be one written by Horatio Alger; if it were a biblical allegory, it would be the story of David and Goliath." ―The New York Times Book Review"Military reporters and defense analysts Yaakov Katz and Amir Bohbot chronicle how Israel became one of the world’s top six arms exporters...tells the story of how an ancient and stateless people returned to their homeland after 2,000 years and, against all odds, not only survived, but prospered." ―ReformJudaism.org"Excellent...the authors tell engaging stories about weapons and ingenuity." ―St. Lewis Jewish Light"An enlightening look into one of the less-familiar corners of the modern military world." ―Kirkus Reviews"Katz and Bohbot have succeeded in presenting a picture of the way in which the particular culture of Israel has produced, and continues to produce responses to security problems and challenges of a uniquely innovative, creative and (generally) effective form." ―Rubin Center"A fascinating and ultimately exhilarating celebration of Israeli innovation, creativity, smarts and chutzpah in defending herself." ―Elder of Ziyon“These fascinating stories explain how Israel became a key source of brilliant military innovation for the entire world. From developing drones out of toy airplanes to cyber warfare against Iran, The Weapons Wizards tells Israel’s amazing tale.” ―Elliott Abrams, Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies, Council on Foreign Relations"The Weapon Wizards is a fascinating analytical history of a remarkable series of creative disruptions in weapons and strategy by Israeli military and technical organizations-sometimes by wonderfully stubborn individuals (e.g. Abe Karem) father of the Predator, standing alone against the crowd. Katz and Bohhot chronicle superbly how nations can survive and win: follow Gideon and nurture the troublemakers." ―R. James Woolsey, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency between 1993-1995"Israel would not exist today if it's technology were not a few steps ahead of the other side. This is the untold story of how Israel has solved technological challenges that seemed flat out impossible―like shooting down short range missiles. Yaakov Katz and Amir Bohbot tell this story with the authority and flair that only great journalists with deep experience in the field can bring. These challenges continue, and could not be more relevant not just for Israel, but for countries around the world." ―Saul Singer, co-author Start-Up Nation"The survival of Israel is not conventional. Having no natural resources, Israel became a champion of technology in agriculture and security. It started by using its human wealth and has remained a start-up nation. The Weapon Wizards shows that the merit of the human is the richest resource of our future; builders, fighters and pioneers can enrich a land more than the land enriched them." ―Shimon Peres, Israel's president (2007-2014) and prime minister (1984-1986 and 1995-1996)"The Weapon Wizards is an essential read for anyone trying to understand Israel and its military. Katz and Bohbot, two of the country's leading defense reporters, tell this fascinating tale how Israel became a military superpower amid endless conflict and against all odds." ―Lt.-Gen. (res.) Shaul Mofaz, Israel's former defense minister (2002-2006) and IDF chief of general staff (1998-2002)

The Jewish people did not have much of a reputation for being fighters until the tiny state of Israel, established in 1947 after the Holocaust and surrounded by enemies, threw itself into the technology of weaponry in order to survive. I knew little about this story-- how the world's arms dealers dealers were reluctant to cooperate with the new state; how the Israelis invented the drone! I wish the two authors had told us more about Stuxnet.I have to be honest and say that this book is not well written-- the chronology is disjointed and the index is scant.

It's hardly news that Israel is a major player in the international arms market. That's a source of consternation to the country's critics and a welcome development for its supporters. Clearly, the reason for that success is that Israel has something to sell that others want to buy...and significant chunks of the international "community" are very eager consumers indeed. Innovation, coupled with proof that these systems work in actual battlefield conditions are other obvious factors in the outsize role Israel plays in armament development and sales. So, what's this book about? It purports to offer insights into why (and how) a small nation - one generally thought to lack sufficient infrastructure and other requisite resources - could produce a range of military products considered first-rank. Unfortunately, "Wizards" is simultaneously superficial and anecdotal. It's sometimes poorly edited ("UC Santa Clara" for "UC Santa Cruz", at least two repetitions of Danny Gold's twin doctorate accomplishments and once even and "Rubin" for "Rabin") and too often larded with unnecessary superlatives. It reads like a PR release or a travel agency blurb. In fact, it has the intellectual sophistication, style and grace of an early "Tom Swift" sci-fi adventure story.More detail on specific weapons systems and their genesis can easily be resourced on Wikipedia, along with a comprehensive inventory of indigenous military products. Many featured historic figures and their involvement in the genesis of various weapons projects are already very well known (e.g., Shimon Peres and his role in the Dimona reactor/nuclear weapons project). What little historical context given by the authors is a device used simply as a platform for introducing new weapons systems.Overall, the book reads like a propaganda screed (compare for instance the absurdly over-simplified section on the Six Day War to Guy Laron's book on the same topic for the other extreme). Credit though is due the authors for their emphasis on the flexibility of the Israeli Defense Forces and its well-deserved accolades for a non-hierarchical, adaptive and "disruptive culture", one that devolves responsibility to lower ranks, cultivates innovation and highlights individual initiative, intelligence and accomplishment. This approach is one the Wehrmacht used to great effect during WW-II. The saving grace of this breezy overview is its readability: it can easily be digested in the time span of a short afternoon.Of course, none of these observations belittle the accomplishments (intellectual and industrial) of the Israeli weapons industry: those are self-evident. Taken in the aggregate though, "Weapons Wizards" is little more than an infomercial, one that adds essentially nothing novel to an otherwise interesting and important topic.

A fairly short book about the weapons systems that Israel has developed. For a small nation with a population less than the state of Georgia, USA. They have done some amazing things, beyond not getting wiped out. The author is proud of his country, and there's no harm in that. The iron dome, drones, tanks, nuclear weapons, satellites, and more. There is a lot to these systems. You get a hint of the politics that produced these weapons without getting bogged down in the in-fighting or the technical problems encountered. This isn't a love letter to Israel, but it's not that far off either. There is definitely some concern expressed in the book about how the rise of non-state actors is becoming a much bigger issue for the safety of Israel and eventually the rest of the world. There's a lot to think about after finishing this book.

The authors are well-known even outside Israel for their insightful reporting on the indigenous aerospace and Defense industry, so I find it no surprise that they have published such a richly detailed book that lends important understanding of the cultural, industrial and political factors that have cultivated tiny Israel's disproportionately large and influential weapons industry. The authors cover a sweeping range of key topics, such as manned aircraft, UAVs, satellites, tanks, missile defense, ammunition and cyber operations. They also touch on Israel's export clientele, including a few deals, most notably with Russia and China, that backfired on the sellers. But all of that builds up to a disappointing conclusion. All of the preceding chapters helped me understand how this little country had defied external and -- in fascinating detail -- internal opposition to become a global powerhouse in the arms industry. The critical question -- how does Israel sustain that status amidst increasingly complex political dynamics, weapons and electronics sophistication, and, not least, internal dissension among leading industrial players -- goes, for the most part unanswered.

Very interesting book. A must read for any tech person doing business in Israel because it will help the reader understand some of the dynamics and interactions with engineers and managers there. The books is interesting in some of the historical references but light on some details. Written by reporters in a reporting style.Fast read. The photos were of poor quality.

I had no idea what reading this book would do for me. It was a book club selection which we will discuss at next meeting. I had no idea of Israel's place in the world of weapons; and their technological and innovative advances were a big surprise. I also got a better idea of the situation in that part of the world. It was an extremely interesting read.

This is an intriguing and eye opening tour of the evolution of Israeli innovation and experimentation. The degree to which this tiny country is a super power and in cyber for example can match any other country in the world is much more understandable after reading this book

This book is so captivating and intriguing that it should be made imperative reading for pre-university education. It engenders Einstein observation that only a fool keeps doing the same thing while expecting different results.

I like the thorough walk through of events and detailed explanation. Unfortunately, I can't agree with the conclusion. I can't fathom how nine hikers would leave their gear, food, clothes and survival equipment to possibly burn in a smoky tent and walk in their sleeping clothes a mile in subzero temperatures, snow and high winds, while hoping to build another fire -if they possibly could find the material...in the snow...and dark...in socks...with no gloves...on a hill they couldn't see ...in a place they hadn't been before. Meanwhile, back at the tent, a smoky camp stove that had already burned it's fuel to cook dinner defies all of their skills and ability to extract it from a 10 by 8 foot cloth tent. Instead of pulling back the tent doors and throwing the stove into the snow, they collapse the tent and walk away to their doom. They already cut the tent open. Might as well pull it back, drag out the stove and put on their clothes. At least put on more than their sleeping gear before wandering off into frigid misery and almost certain death for no logical reason. These people knew that they had little to no chance of surviving with no protective clothing and it was just a few feet away behind a layer of canvas and smoke. The kind of cold they faced in pajamas was unthinkable. The idea that smoke would force them to abandon all of their clothes and gear to wander off to face frostbite, hypothermia and eventual death by freezing.... No.I don't buy it.

This is the third book I have read on this subject. No one will ever know for certain what happened to the nine students, but this book I believe comes closest to a logical explanation. The author very cleverly sucks you into a false supposition about halfway through the book. You think that he is going to come up with some silly theory about a yeti or some other creature. I almost quit reading at that point but luckily I stuck with it. He goes on to propose a very plausible theory of what happened. I think I will need to read no more books on this subject. If you are interested in this tragedy I think you will find the book very worthwhile.

This is a good read and a very plausible explanation, far more reasonable than some theories put about in books done by legitimate publishers. The maps and photos were extensive and a very useful addition. It alternates between the story of the hikers and the thoughts of the guide hired by the government to find the hikers. Jumping back and forth between the two is mildly annoying to me, but it is a fairly standard device. The guide's viewpoint is one I hadn't read/heard from before. While it's a short book, it still quite comprehensive for what it attempts. This therefore is a good introduction to this incident (particularly given the price), and the author's theory may well be correct.Be aware some of the photos are grisly, (hard to avoid given the subject though). And the writing is not always polished. There were a few grammar, typos in the text. Nothing that bothered me that much, or interfered with my reading the story.SPOILER ALERTAs for the theory of what happened, - in one respect it entirely explains why the hikers left their tent so abruptly and poorly dressed. But I agree with a few other reviewers, it doesn't explain why they then left the environs of the tent, rather than taking steps to resolve the situation, or at least retrieve clothing. The alternative - walking around in -20 degree weather improperly dressed, sure death - doesn't seem sensible or sane. But I think the theory is as good as any other I've read, and so I can recommend this book. That doesn't mean I'm entirely convinced

This story is heartbreaking, frightening, creepy & fascinating! The camaraderie of nine cross-country friends/acquaintances (very little information is included about their interpersonal relationships among each other, except two who apparently were smitten with each other) was shattered within minutes & turned into a horrific tragedy for all within hours! The legends & urban tales of this 1959 mystery ran amok for several years until it was finally investigated properly & thoroughly in relatively more recent years & I think Mr Wilkins has the most cohesive & logical timeline providing his facts are correct. This was not the most polished novel on the subject (there were the usual obvious editing issues) however, it really did not distract from the story, in my opinion. It includes many photographs from the actual would-be adventurers taken during their outing but many also taken by the search & rescuers, many of those who were sadly, friends of the victims. This is likely not the most definitive or polished effort but it does bring some of the more outlandish & expensive books on the subject down to earth & rejects the crazy fables that inevitably find their way in print when all the facts & forensics are not readily forthcoming, for example, this unfortunate incident was due to an UFO encounter, a test missile, the CIA, &, of course, yetis or sasquatch, etc. This account was my first foray into the subject but its facts & evidence are pretty compelling & also, a short but very interesting start for those who would like to investigate this intriguing mystery further!

A blend of fact and fiction, rather than the straight-forward history it purports to be. The author's explanation of the cause of the deaths of the nine skiers is convincing, although foreshadowing makes promises the story will never fulfill. It is not a horror story. Nor is it strictly factual, as the author imagines conversations and actions among a group of people who neither recorded these nor lived to tell what they did and said. Further, the book is full of egregious errors that even the most basic proof-reading should have caught and corrected. The writing is not compelling, even if one is able to look past these extraneous words littering every page of the book, and the author makes the mistake of repeating many statements . . . to the point, at times, of beating dead horses. Or skiers.

Letters of a Javanese PrincessBy Raden Adjeng Kartini

In her letters, Raden Adjeng Kartini wrote about her views of the social conditions prevailing at that time, particularly the condition of native Indonesian women. The majority of her letters protest the tendency of Javanese Culture to impose obstacles for the development of women. She wanted women to have the freedom to learn and study. R.A. Kartini wrote of her ideas and ambitions, including Zelf-ontwikkeling, Zelf-onderricht, Zelf-vertrouwen, Zelf-werkzaamheid and Solidariteit. These ideas were all based on Religieusiteit, Wijsheid en Schoonheid, that is, belief in God, wisdom, and beauty, along with Humanitarianisme (humanitarianism) and Nationalisme (nationalism). Kartini's letters also expressed her hopes for support from overseas. In her correspondence with Estell "Stella" Zeehandelaar, R.A. Kartini expressed her desire to be like a European youth. She depicted the sufferings of Javanese women fettered by tradition, unable to study, secluded, and who must be prepared to participate in polygamous marriages with men they don't know. Raden Adjeng Kartini loved her father deeply, although it is clear that her deep affection for him became yet another obstacle to the realisation of her ambitions. He was sufficiently progressive to allow his daughters schooling until the age of 12 but at that point the door to further schooling was firmly closed. In his letters, her father also expressed his affection for R.A. Kartini. Eventually, he gave permission for R.A. Kartini to study to become a teacher in Batavia (now Jakarta), although previously he had prevented her from cral of her pen friends worked on her behalf to support Kartini in this endeavour. And when finally Kartini's ambition was thwarted, many of her friends expressed their disappointment. In the end her plans to study in the Netherlands were transmuted into plans to journey to Batavia on the advice of Mrs. Abendanon that this would be best for R.A. Kartini and her younger sister, R.Ayu Rukmini. Nevertheless, in 1903 at the age of 24, her plans to study to become a teacher in Batavia came to nothing. In a letter to Mrs. Abendanon, R.A. Kartini wrote that the plan had been abandoned because she was going to be married ..."In short, I no longer desire to take advantage of this opportunity, because I am to be married..". This was despite the fact that for its part, the Dutch Education Department had finally given permission for R.A. Kartini and R.Ay. Rukmini to study in Batavia. As the wedding approached, R.A. Kartini's attitude towards Javanese traditional customs began to change. She became more tolerant. She began to feel that her marriage would bring good fortune for her ambition to develop a school for native women. In her letters, R.A. Kartini mentioned that not only did her esteemed husband support her desire to develop the woodcarving industry in Jepara and the school for native women, but she also mentioned that she was going to write a book. Sadly, this ambition was unrealised as a result of her premature death in 1904 at the age of 25.

Review
Through these letters, written between 1899 and 1904, the compassion, growth, humility, and pride of a young Indonesian woman, Raden Adjeng Kartini, reach out for the reader to embrace and hold dear. Raden Kartini wrote these letters between the ages of twenty and twenty-five, when she suddenly died after childbirth. Her formal education, rare for girls of her time, stopped at adolescence. At fifteen, she and her sisters were tutored in "feminine" handicrafts by a young Dutch woman, Mevrouw Ovink-Soer, an ardent feminist and socialist who articulated and nurtured the seeds of independence already planted in Kartini. Kartini's goal was education for Javanese girls, a radical thought at the time and at odds with her Moslem religion. But as envisioned by Kartini, education was the way to "set the rice upon the table for every Javanese." Indonesia, a Dutch colony for more than two hundred years, had a small but vocal Dutch group concerned with the treatment of the Indonesian people. Through her father's position in local government, Kartini met and corresponded with many Dutch people sympathetic to their plight. A childlike innocence permeates her letters, and while we read her changing thoughts about the Dutch and follow her growth as she comes to a more developed understanding of her culture and religion, we are pulled into her struggles for a greater good and filled with sorrow at her early death. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith

About the Author
Raden Adjeng Kartini, Lady Kartini, (21 April 1879 – 17 September 1904), sometimes known as Raden Ayu Kartini, was a prominent Indonesian national heroine from Java. She was also a pioneer in the area of education for girls and women's rights for Indonesians. Born into an aristocratic Javanese family in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, she attended a Dutch language primary school. She aspired to further education but the option was unavailable to her and other girls in Javanese society. She came into contact with various officials and influential people including J.H. Abendanon, in charge of implementing the Dutch Ethical Policy. Kartini wrote letters about her feelings and they were published in a Dutch magazine and later as: Out of Darkness to Light, Women's Life in the Village and Letters of a Javanese Princess. Her birthday is now celebrated as Kartini Day in Indonesia. She took an interest in mysticism and opposed polygamy. Her advocacy for the education of girls was continued by her sisters. Kartini Schools were named for her a fund established in her name to fund the education of girls.
