While I'm a bit beyond the "aspiring" tag, I still felt like a newbie as I read - absorbed, actually - this book. Each of the "Power" pointers is filled with pithy, common-sense information, and none of them is beyond the grasp of the wannabe speaker.I wish someone had told me about this book before. It is a treasure.
There are so many gems in this book, for new and seasoned speakers alike. If you're looking for practical advice that you an implement to improve your public speaking, this is a terrific resource. I will admit that I was a little put out by the frequent biblical references, but the rest of the content is so good that it still makes the book worthwhile.Do bear in mind that some suggestions may be a wee outdated or should only be used in certain situations. For example, I thought I'd try the suggestion to bring extra emphasis to a quote during a speech by lifting a paper and reading the quote rather than just reciting it. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when I tried this the first (and only) time during a Toastmasters speech, several evaluators suggested that I try to memorize quotes rather than read them. Admittedly, it did feel a little awkward when I did it, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to try something new!
Great book on public speaking and presentations. The author gives anecdotal accounts of real life situations that I found interesting and help the book flow. Over the years I have read similar topic books and have generally found them dry and without much color, this book is the exception. I found numerous pointers on how I can improve my public speaking.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to give a better speech. My dad agrees. My dad had a big speech to give and was nervous about it so I loaned him this book. He enjoyed reading it and said that it gave him more confidence and eased his nerves a bit. Only reading this book the day before his speech, he was able to use some of the suggestions to rewrite his speech, which he believed positively impacted his speech. He was very happy that I loaned him this book.
Twenty-one tricks of the greatest communicators and change makers of history by an author who wrote speeches for five American presidents. Five!! Imagine the experience of the author. Many of the 21 techniques are truly amazing. For example, Churchill's method of preparing a speech for the ear, Napoleon's power pause, or how to use effectively statistics in a speech. I'm convinced that applying and mastering only a few of the 21 techniques will supply the reader with the presence, poise, and power to electrify his or her talk.
Fantastic book on public speaking, I highly recommend it if you're going to be in front of an audience!
Of all the speech writing related books I've had the opportunity to read, this is the absolute best.Packed with prescriptive guidance, plenty of historical anecdotes and concise in a very pleasing and easy to read format.Excellent book, and I look forward to incorporating these lessons in future speeches.
Offers some practical advice for public speaking. Especially enjoyed the anecdotes about Churchill. The idea of the power button that preps the audience to receive your power phrase stands out.
Book has a rather slow start with basics of public speaking, but get into some real gems that were used by Churchill and other great orators!It is helpful to all who do public speaking, or writing for that matter! I recommend it!
